FROM HANNANT'S

IN THE U.K.

Dear Customer,

Following the recent decline in value of the £ against most other currencies we buy from we have been faced with implementing large price increases on most ranges.

We have decided that rather than increase the price by 20% to 28% it would be better to stop supplying certain ranges with a full trade discount. These are mainly resin kits. No other ranges are effected at the moment.

The following ranges now have 10% trade discount rather than 33.33%. Many overseas customers will have a stronger currency against the £ so will probably pay about the same as you did a few months ago and so will not be effected by this change.

Thank you for your understanding. Because of the fluctuating currency market we have decided to delay the printing of our paper lists indefinitely.

CHINA PRICE INCREASES

COLLECTORS SHOULD BE MADE AWARE OF THE RECENT PRICE INCREASES FOR MOLD MAKING AND PRODUCTION IN CHINA.

THIS APPLIES TO PLASTIC AND METAL PRODUCT.

THE OVERALL INCREASE SEEMS TO BE ABOUT 30%.

THIS WAS ACTUALLY THE MAIN TOPIC OF DISCUSSION AT THE RECENT WEST COASTER SHOW. EVERYONE FROM TSSD TO KING & COUNTRY ARE SCRATCHING THEIR HEADS OVER THIS ONE, AND THE POSSIBLE EFFECTS ON THE HOBBY.

WE HAVE ALREADY SEEN SOME EFFECTS:

FORCES OF VALOR / UNIMAX - IS ONLY RELEASING 3 NEW DIE CAST MILITARY VEHICLES THIS YEAR. THEY HAVE QUIT THE "HISTORICAL LEGENDS" PAINTED, PLASTIC FIGURE SERIES ALTOGETHER.

UNIMAX ALSO MAKES REMOTE CONTROL ITEMS, PLUSH TOYS AND DOLLS; PERHAPS THEY ARE GETTING OUT OF THE "MILITARY MODE" ALTOGETHER?

( Panache Place is the Distributor, located in Southern California; they are NOT "FOV" )

IMEX - HAS YET TO RELEASE THE LONG AWAITED ALAMO MEXICAN INFANTRY AND CAVALRY SETS IN 54mm. "IMEX" IS A LARGE MANUFACTURER OF REMOTE CONTROL PARTS AS WELL.

21st CENTURY TOYS - HAS EXCLUDED THE FIGURES FROM THEIR NEWER BOXED TANKS / VEHICLES, AND THE TANKS / VEHICLES NO LONGER CONTAIN ANY METAL.

RELEASES FROM CERTAIN OVERSEAS MANUFACTURERS HAVE SLOWED IN THEIR RELEASE DATES TO THE USA.

A CALL-TO-ARMS - IS ONLY RE-RELEASING CURRENT PRODUCT, AND IT IS OUR UNDERSTANDING THEY ARE NOT RELEASING ANYTHING NEW FOR AWHILE.

I THINK WHAT YOU WILL SEE OVERALL, IS A GENERAL SLOWING OF NEW PRODUCT RELEASES BY MOST COMPANIES, WHICH MAY ACTUALLY BE A GOOD THING.

THERE HAS BEEN SO MUCH NEW PRODUCT RELEASED, IN BOTH METAL & PLASTIC, THAT MANY COLLECTORS SIMPLY CANNOT KEEP UP WITH THE QUANTITIES OF NEW STUFF.  THIS WAS ECHOED BY SEVERAL COLLECTORS AT THE RECENT WEST COAST SHOW.

PRICING:

HARD TO SAY HOW ALL OF THE INCREASED PRODUCTION COSTS WILL AFFECT METAL AND PLASTIC PRICING.

FOR OUR PART, WE WILL TRY TO RELEASE AT LEAST 2 NEW FIGURE SETS THIS YEAR, AS WE DID LAST YEAR, AND TRY TO KEEP THE PRICING REASONABLE. BUT WE HAVE TO CHARGE ENOUGH TO COVER COSTS AND STAY IN BUSINESS.

WE WILL ALSO BE RELEASING SOME NEW "ACCESSORY" PIECES AS WE DID LAST YEAR, AND MOST OF THAT PRODUCT IS MADE IN THE USA. BUT THOSE "FOAM" MANUFACTURERS COSTS HAVE GONE UP AS WELL.

EVERYTHING IS TIED TO OIL & GAS, SHIPPING COSTS, MANUFACTURING COSTS, LABOR COSTS, THE U.S. DOLLAR, ETC.

IN OTHER WORDS, THE "GLOBAL ECONOMY" IS AFFECTING NICK & DEANNA, WORKING OUT OF THEIR GARAGE IN FALLBROOK, CA!!??

IF ANYTHING NEW DEVELOPS, WE WILL ATTEMPT TO KEEP YOU POSTED.

Hello Nick,

I received the painted TSSD Union and Confederate Cavalry today and they are awesome! As a collector and a 39 year old kid with children who want to play with “dad’s civil war toys”, there has been a big missing gap of good quality Civil War Cavalry. Your figures are wonderfully sculpted with excellent poses and the horses are some of the best I’ve seen. I was expecting to be “wowed” because you always do fantastic work but I am blown away. These are just wonderful and worth every penny. Thank you very much and please know you have a life time supporter in Fredericksburg.

All the best,

Hugh

Received the Painted Reb Cavalry Figures -- Great Figures and Fantastic paint jobs!!

I think you should produce a line of painted or unpainted plastic Medieval Norman Cavalry that would complement the K&C, Conte Medieval sets.

Thanks!

WE SET A NEW ATTENDANCE RECORD FOR "OPEN HOUSES"!!

THANK YOU!!

SPECIAL THANKS TO ALL THE MOMS & DADS!!!!

A PLEASANT SURPRISE WAS A "SURPRISE" VISIT BY CRAIG COVNER- ON THE RIGHT! MANY HOBBYISTS KNOW CRAIG FROM HIS YEARS OF HOBBY INTEREST AND HIS ACTIVITIES WITH THE ALAMO AND THE ALAMO JOURNAL & SOCIETY. SHOWN WITH THE AFOREMENTIONED DAVID KLUECK. ( I FORGOT TO ASK DAVID HOW TO GET A 14' POOL BACK INTO A 12" x  30" BOX!? )

AS ALWAYS THERE IS SOMETHING "SPECIAL" AT THESE SHOWS. THIS YEAR'S EVENT WAS PROVIDED BY TSSD's VERY FIRST CUSTOMER EVER ( 10 year ago!! ) - TONY WRIGHT FROM LONG BEACH, CA.

TONY HAD DESIGNED AND BUILT AN AMAZING "FIRING" TREBUCHET!!  HERE, HE PULLS THE FIRING MECHANISM, AND WATCHES AS IT HURLES A METAL LUG NUT 20 FEET ACROSS THE YARD!! TOO COOL!!

DSCXOH9.JPG (149004 bytes)

AS ALWAYS, BRUCE CHEW BROUGHT ALONG SOME OF HIS AMAZING "CONVERSIONS". SHOWN ABOVE ARE SOME OF HIS TSSD CIVIL WAR UNION CONVERSIONS. MORE PHOTOS WILL BE POSTED LATER ON THE "WHAT GUYS DO..." PAGE . GREAT STUFF AND THANK YOU BRUCE!

TSSD

GOES "HOLLYWOOD"!!

THIS PAST FRIDAY EVENING THE TSSD's WERE HOME CHANNEL SURFING.  WE STUMBLED UPON A DETECTIVE / CRIME DRAMA CALLED "NUMBERS".

THERE WERE A SERIES OF SMALL ITEMS LEFT AT A MURDER SCENE, AND ONE OF THE ITEMS WAS A TOY SOLDIER.

AT FIRST ALL I COULD SEE WAS THE BASE OF THE FIGURE, AND IT LOOKED LIKE A CONTE AIRBORNE FIGURE. BUT THEY SHOWED IT AGAIN, AND I THOUGHT I RECOGNIZED THE "BAR".

WHEN THEY SHOWED THE FIGURE A THIRD TIME, FROM THE BACK, I REALIZED THAT IT WAS INDEED A TSSD GI - "BAR-MAN"!!

TSSD-BAR-NUMB3RS-01.jpg (141549 bytes) TSSD-BAR-NUMB3RS-02.jpg (142662 bytes)

PRETTY COOL SEEING ONE OF YOUR OWN CREATIONS USED IN A TV SHOW OR MOVIE. I REMEMBER SEEING AIRFIX AND BRITAINS IN THE PAST. GUESS THEY ARE "MODERNIZING" THEIR PROPS, AND I WONDER WHERE THEY GOT IT?

THE ONLY PROBLEM IS, "BAR-MAN" HAS GONE A.W.O.L.

WHEN LAST SEEN, HE WAS CRUISING RODEO DRIVE IN BEVERLY HILLS WITH "THE GOVERNATOR"!  "B-MAN" WAS WEARING HIS OAKLEYS, A STETSON, AND DRIVING A RED HUMMER!!??

COACH GETS ONE WILD POOL GUEST

The wildfires in Southern California last week presented many unforeseen, even bizarre, problems. Chargers special teams coach Steve Crosby got a one-of-a-kind call last week while the team was practicing in Arizona. Crosby's house is near the San Diego Wild Animal Park, a safari-type theme park. The area's wildfires ripped apart some openings in the park, allowing some animals to roam away. Crosby got a call from his wife saying she had walked outside to assess the damage and found a hippopotamus in their swimming pool. She called the authorities, who came, tranquilized the animal and removed it.

I just wanted to comment on the new cavalry figures.  These are the best that I've ever seen.  I am currently building a brigade of Nathan Forrest's cavalry.  You probably know that Forrest traveled with an escort of his best troops.  In my brigade, your new horsemen will definitely lead that escort.  Thanks for these SUPERIOR additions to the collection.  Dave Slavin.

Hello, Nick & DeAnna!

This is only to say my most recent order just arrived and I am amazed at the
quality of the ACW Cavalry you made. These are perfect! But one has to hold
them, to look very close at the details, to understand how much perfection
can fit into one 1/32 escale toy soldier. There's no comparison between
these and other ranges that came before. I guess this proves beyond
reasonable doubt you guys LOVE toy soldiers as much as the collectors who
buy them. Both the cavalrymen and the horses are master pieces as far as
plastic toy soldiers are concerned and someone would have a lot of problem
trying to improve them. How can you improve perfection?

Maybe you could paint these ACW ranges to sell them as "Soldiers of the World"
too? I'd like that.

What else can I say? Congratulations on a job very well done. You deserve
them.

My only regret, as usual, is that no such toys were available when I was a
boy. At least now I can buy them, don't have to ask Mom and Dad, right? It
makes things a whole lot easier!
:-)

All the best,
Marcelo

Hi Deanna & Nick

The Cavalry arrived yesterday and they were impatiently waiting for me when I came home from work last night ( I work 2nd shift)

These guys seem to literally EXPLODE from the bag!!! The poses & detail of both horses & riders is SENSATIONAL!

My compliments to your sculptor - he has done a GREAT job in capturing the essence & dash of cavalrymen - you can almost hear them hollering!!!

THANKS SO VERY MUCH for these TERRIFIC FIGURES!!!!!!

To the very nice people at the Chicago Toy Soldier Show,

My son and I visited your room at the OTSN this past week and we have examined every detail of your soldiers.  Our interests are with the WWII soldiers.  Your designs and detail are fantastic.  And you were very kind and polite and helpful.

Even though I was aware of this technique, you took the time and told my son how to straighten the bent plastic.  So we tried your idea and it worked wonderfully.  I have been collecting plastic WWII soldiers for almost 25 years and I am particular in the details, quality, and the soldier just being a toy .  Your product is superior to others in your field.  It was nice to meet you at the show and I guarantee we will be buying from you in the future.  Often times we don't get positive feedback, and I just wanted you to know that we are well pleased with your product and service. Terrific show! I also wanted to thank you for the free package of soldiers you donated to the show, this was a wonderful gesture and will keep us coming back to the show and buying your products.  Thank you.

Jim Chester

Nick and DeAnna,

The toy soldiers/cavalry literally just arrived. Wow!! These are amazing. This is by far the best cavalry I have ever seen. We will definitely be ordering more when we get home and building large armies for the North and South. Again, WOW!!!

Congratulations, these are spectacular!

Hugh

Nick,

The soldiers and horses are awesome!  Congrats, they are a work of art!! Bravo! I am thrilled at the work you are doing and glad to support it.

YOUNGSTERS IN THE HOBBY

I'M NOT SURE WHAT IS GOING ON, BUT LATELY WE HAVE HAD LARGE NUMBERS OF "YOUNG COLLECTORS" VISIT US HERE AT THE "STORE".

WHICH IS GREAT!

I THINK EVERYONE AGREES, IF WE DON'T GET MORE YOUNG PEOPLE INVOLVED, THE HOBBY WILL BE PRETTY SAD WHEN THE "BOOMERS" START FADING.

WHAT'S COOL IS THAT A LOT OF THE NEW CUSTOMERS ARE COMING BY WAY OF "WORD OF MOUTH".

THERE IS A COMMUNITY NORTH OF US, TEMECULA IN RIVERSIDE COUNTY, AND WE NOW HAVE A LARGE CONTINGENT OF YOUNG COLLECTORS ( and the Mom's and Dad's that bring them ) COMING ON A REGULAR, MONTHLY BASIS FROM JUST THAT COMMUNITY ALONE.

THE KIDS COME WITH THEIR OWN MONEY THAT THEY HAVE EARNED. WHEN THEY HAVE ENOUGH SAVED TO BUY A BAG OF FIGURES, THEY CALL AND A NICE MOM OR DAD BRINGS THEM - USUALLY A GROUP OF NEIGHBORHOOD KIDS.

WITH SUMMER, WE ARE NOW GETTING A LOT OF PEOPLE HERE ON VACATION FROM AROUND THE U.S.A., AND OVERSEAS. IF THEY ARE IN SAN DIEGO, THEY CALL TO COME OVER, AND THEY BRING THE KIDS, OF COURSE.

WE ALSO SEEM TO BE MEETING A LOT OF YOUNG GUYS IN THEIR 20's, 30's and 40's ( yes, that's Young! ) - WHO ARE DISCOVERING AND ENJOYING THE HOBBY. MANY ARE MARINES FROM NEARBY CAMP PENDLETON.

I AM JUST "REPORTING" ON THIS BECAUSE WE HEAR SOME "NEGATIVE" STUFF ABOUT THE HOBBY, BUT TO DEANNA AND I, THE FUTURE LOOKS PRETTY BRIGHT. WHETHER WE ARE STILL RUNNING THIS BUSINESS, OR "RETIRED" AND JUST COLLECTING OURSELVES,  IT ALL LOOKS VERY EXCITING FOR THE FUTURE.

WHILE WE DO NOT HAVE A "REAL STORE" AT A STRIP CENTER, ETC. - WE DO HAVE ABOUT 2,000 SQUARE FEET OF STUFF ON DISPLAY AT ALL TIMES. PLUS THE WAREHOUSE IN TOWN.

KIDS AND ADULTS "OOH" AND "AHH" AS THEY WALK INTO THE 2 LOFT ROOMS OF DISPLAYS, DIORAMAS, THOUSANDS OF PAINTED GUYS, ROWS OF TANKS, AWESOME BUILDINGS, ETC. IT'S GREAT!!

MY HAT IS OFF TO THE FEW GUYS THAT HAVE REAL "BRICK & MORTAR" STORES FOR JUST TOY SOLDIERS. I DON'T KNOW HOW THEY DO IT? I GUESS IF WE HAD STARTED THIS 20 YEARS AGO INSTEAD OF 10 YEARS AGO, WE MIGHT HAVE DONE THAT AS WELL. BUT NOT IN CALIFORNIA, AS THE COSTS, REAL ESTATE, RULES & REGS ARE INCREDIBLE.

WE ACTUALLY GOT TURNED DOWN BY A "DISTRIBUTOR" IN CALIFORNIA THE OTHER DAY, BECAUSE WE DO NOT HAVE A "TRUE" BRICK & MORTAR STORE. THEY ONLY SELL TO "STORES". I CAN CERTAINLY SEE THEIR POINT, BUT NOT EVERYONE CAN AFFORD THE HIGH COSTS OF A "HOBBY SHOP".

BESIDES, WE ONLY SELL "TOY SOLDIERS". NOT REMOTE CONTROLLED CARS, PLANES, HELO's, ETC. NOT PAINTS, BOOKS, PLASTIC & WOOD MODEL KITS, TRAINS, TROLLS, AND ETC.  JUST "TOY SOLDIERS", AND ONLY "PLASTIC" AT THAT.

BUT I DIGRESS.

THE MAIN THING IS, MORE YOUNG PEOPLE WILL EQUAL LONGEVITY FOR THE HOBBY. WE WILL BE HANDING OUT APPROXIMATELY 130 FULL BAGS OF PLASTIC TOY SOLDIERS TO KIDS ON SUNDAY AT "OTSN", AND I HOPE THERE ARE 130 KIDS THERE TO TAKE `EM!  IN TEXAS WE HANDED OUT ABOUT 75 BAGS, SO IT WAS A GREAT "KID TURN-OUT" FOR A FIRST TIME AFFAIR.

REMEMBER, WE WERE ALL KIDS ONCE. WE LOVED THE HOBBY THEN, AND WE LOVE IT NOW - SO WHY SHOULDN'T WE PASS IT ALONG TO THE NEXT GENERATION!

Why English Only

A U.S. Navy Admiral was attending a Naval Conference that included
admirals from the U.S. , English, Canadian, Australian and French Navies.

At a cocktail reception, he found himself standing with a large group of
officers that included personnel from most of the countries.

Everyone was chatting away in English as they sipped their drinks but a French admiral suddenly complained that, whereas Europeans learn many languages, Americans learn only English.

He then asked: "Why is it that we always have to speak
English in these conferences rather than speaking French?"

Without hesitating, the British Admiral replied: "Maybe it's because the Brits,
Canadians, Aussies and Americans arranged it so you wouldn't have to speak
German."

You could have heard a pin drop!

BEST LAWYER STORY OF THE YEAR, DECADE AND PROBABLY THE CENTURY

 Charlotte, North Carolina

A lawyer purchased a box of very rare and  expensive cigars, and then insured  them against, among other things, fire.  Within a month, having smoked his entire stockpile  of these great cigars and  without yet having made even his first premium  payment on the policy the  lawyer filed a claim against the insurance  company.

In his claim, the lawyer stated the cigars were  lost "in a series of small  fires."  The insurance company refused to pay, citing the  obvious reason, that the  man had consumed the cigars in the normal fashion.

The lawyer sued.. and WON!  (stay with me)

Delivering the ruling, the judge agreed with the  insurance company that the  claim was frivolous. The judge stated  nevertheless, that the lawyer held a  policy from the company, which it had warranted  that the cigars were  insurable and also guaranteed that it would insure  them against fire,  without defining what is considered to be  "unacceptable fire" and was  obligated to pay the claim.

Rather than endure lengthy and costly appeal  process, the insurance company  accepted the ruling and paid $ 15,000 to the lawyer  for his loss of the cigars  lost in the "fires".

NOW FOR THE BEST PART..  After the lawyer cashed the check, the insurance  company had him arrested on  24 counts of ARSON!!!  With his own insurance claim and testimony from  the previous case being used  against him, the lawyer was convicted of  intentionally burning his insured  property and was sentenced to 24 months in jail  and a $ 24,000 fine.

This is a True Story and was the First Place  winner in the recent Criminal  Lawyers Award Contest.

"ON BEING A TEXAN"

BY

BUM PHILLIPS

( FORMER HOUSTON OILERS HEAD COACH )

Dear Friends,

Last year, I wrote a small piece about what it means to me to be a Texan. My friends know it means about damned near everything. Anyway, this fella' asked me to reprint what I'd wrote and I didn't have it. So I set out to think about rewriting something. I considered writing about all the great things I love about Texas. There are way too many things to list. I can't even begin to do it justice. Lemme' let you in on my short list. It starts with The Window at Big Bend, which in and of itself is proof of God. It goes to Lake Sam Rayburn where my Granddad taught me more about life than fishin', and enough about fishin' to last a lifetime. I can talk about Tyler, and Longview, and Odessa and Cisco, and Abilene, Seymour and Poteet and every place in between. Every little part of Texas feels special. Every person who ever flew over the Lone Star thinks of Bandera or Victoria or Manor or wherever they call "home" as the best little part of the best state.

So I got to thinking about it, and here's what I really want to say. Last year, I talked about all the great places and great heroes who make Texas what it is. I talked about Willie and Waylon and Michael Dell and Michael DeBakey and my Dad and LBJ and Denton Cooley. I talked about everybody that came to mind. It took me sitting here tonight reading this stack of emails and thinkin' about where I've been and what I've done since the last time I wrote on this occasion to remind me what it is about Texas that is really great.

You see, this last month or so I finally went to Europe for the first time. I hadn't ever been, and didn't too much want to. But you know all my damned friends are always talking about "the time they went to Europe." So, I finally went. It was a hell of a trip to be sure. All they did when they saw me was say the same thing, before they'd ever met me. "Hey cowboy, we love Texas." I guess the hat tipped 'em off. But let me tell you what, they all came up with a smile on their faces. You know why? They knew for damned sure that I was gonna' be nice to 'em. They knew it 'cause they knew I was from Texas. They knew something that hadn't even hit me. They knew Texans, even though they'd never met one.

That's when it occurred to me. Do you know what is great about Texas? Do you know why when my friend Beverly and I were trekking across country to see 15 baseball games we got sick and had to come home after 8? Do you know why every time I cross the border I say, "Lord, please don't let me die in ______"? Do you know why children in Japan can look at a picture of the great State and know exactly what it is about the same time they can tell a rhombus from a trapezoid? I can tell you that right quick. You. The same spirit that made 186 men cross that line in the sand in San Antonio damned near 165 years ago is still in you today. Why else would my friend send me William Barrett Travis' plea for help in an email just a week ago, or why would Charles Stenciled ask me to reprint a Texas Independence column from a year ago?

What would make my friend Elizabeth say, "I don't know if I can marry a man who doesn't love Texas like I do?" Why in the hell are 1,000 people coming to my house this weekend to celebrate a holiday for what used to be a nation that is now a state? Because the spirit that made that nation is the spirit that burned in every person who founded this great place we call Texas, and they passed it on through blood or sweat to every one of us. You see, that spirit that made Texas what it is, is alive in all of us, even if we can't stand next to a cannon to prove it, and it's our responsibility to keep that fire burning. Every person who ever put a "Native Texan" or an "I wasn't born in Texas but I got here as fast as I could" sticker on his car understands. Anyone who ever hung a map of Texas on their wall or flew a Lone Star flag on their porch knows what I mean.

My Dad's buddy Bill has an old saying. He says that some people were forged of a hotter fire. Well, that's what it is to be Texan. To be forged of a hotter fire. To know that part of Colorado was Texas. That part of New Mexico was Texas. That part of Oklahoma was Texas. Yep. Talk all you want. Part of what you got was what we gave you. To look at a picture of Idaho or Istanbul and say, "what the Hell is that?" when you know that anyone in Idaho or Istanbul who sees a picture of Texas knows damned good and well what it is. It isn't the shape, it isn't the state, it's the state of mind. You're what makes Texas. The fact that you would take 15 minutes out of your day to read this, because that's what Texas means to you, that's what makes Texas what it is. The fact that when you see the guy in front of you litter you honk and think, "Sonofa*****. Littering on MY highway."

When was the last time you went to a person's house in New York and you saw a big map of New York on their wall? That was never. When did you ever drive through Oklahoma and see their flag waving on four businesses in a row? Can you even tell me what the flag in Louisiana looks like? I damned sure can't. But I bet my ass you can't drive 20 minutes from your house and not see a business that has a big Texas flag as part of its logo. If you haven't done business with someone called All Tex something or Lone Star somebody or other, or Texas such and such, you hadn't lived here for too long.

When you ask a man from New York what he is, he'll say a stockbroker, or an accountant, or an ad exec. When you ask a woman from California what she is, she'll tell you her last name or her major. Hell, either of 'em might say "I'm a republican," or they might be a democrat. When you ask a Texan what they are, before they say, "I'm a Methodist," or "I'm a lawyer," or "I'm a Smith," they tell you they're a Texan. I got nothin' against all those other places, and Lord knows they've probably got some fine folks, but in your gut you know it just like I do, Texas is just a little different.

So tomorrow when you drive down the road and you see a person broken down on the side of the road, stop and help. When you are in a bar in California, buy a Californian a drink and tell him it's for Texas Independence Day. Remind the person in the cube next to you that he wouldn't be here enjoying this if it weren't for Sam Houston, and if he or she doesn't know the story, tell them. When William Barrett Travis wrote in 1836 that he would never surrender and he would have Victory or Death, what he was really saying was that he and his men were forged of a hotter fire. They weren't your average everyday men.

Well, that is what it means to be a Texan. It meant it then, and that's why it means it today. It means just what all those people north of the Red River accuse us of thinking it means. It means there's no mountain that we can't climb. It means that we can swim the Gulf in the winter. It means that Earl Campbell ran harder and Houston is bigger and Dallas is richer and Alpine is hotter and Stevie Ray was smoother and God vacations in Texas.

It means that come Hell or high water, when the chips are down and the Good Lord is watching, we're Texans by damned, and just like in 1836, that counts for something. So for today at least, when your chance comes around, go out and prove it. It's true because we believe it's true. If you are sitting wondering what the Hell I'm talking about, this ain't for you.

But if the first thing you are going to do when the Good Lord calls your number is find the men who sat in that tiny mission in San Antonio and shake their hands, then you're the reason I wrote this tonight, and this is for you. So until next time you hear from me, God Bless and Happy Texas Independence Day.

May you be poor in misfortune, rich in blessings, slow to make enemies and quick to make friends. But rich or poor, quick or slow, may you know nothing but happiness from this day forward.

THE BEST COMEBACK LINE EVER!

Marine Corps General Reinwald was interviewed on the radio the other day and you have to read his reply to the lady who interviewed him concerning guns and children.

Regardless of how you feel about gun  laws you gotta love this!!  This is one of the best comeback lines of all time. It is a portion of National Public Radio (NPR) interview between a female broadcaster and US Marine Corps General Reinwald who was about to sponsor a Boy Scout Troop visiting his military installation.

  FEMALE INTERVIEWER:

So, General Reinwald, what things are you going  to teach these young boys when they visit your base?

GENERAL REINWALD:

We're going to teach them climbing, canoeing,  archery, and shooting.

 FEMALE INTERVIEWER:

Shooting! That's a bit irresponsible, isn't it?

 GENERAL REINWALD:

I don't see why, they'll be properly supervised on  the rifle range.

 FEMALE INTERVIEWER:

Don't you admit that this is a terribly dangerous activity to be teaching children?

 GENERAL REINWALD:

I don't see how. We will be teaching them proper rifle discipline before they even touch a firearm.

 FEMALE INTERVIEWER:

But you're equipping them to become violent  killers.

 GENERAL REINWALD:

Well, Ma'am, you're equipped to be a prostitute,  but you're not one, are you?

The radio went silent and the interview ended.

 You gotta love the Marines!

A CHRISTMAS POEM

The embers glowed softly, and in their dim light,

I gazed round the room and I cherished the sight.

My wife was asleep, her head on my chest,

My daughter beside me, angelic in rest.

Outside the snow fell, a blanket of white,

Transforming the yard to a winter delight.

The sparkling lights in the tree I believe,

Completed the magic that was Christmas Eve.

My eyelids were heavy, my breathing was deep,

Secure and surrounded by love I would sleep.

In perfect contentment, or so it would seem,

So I slumbered, perhaps I started to dream.

The sound wasn't loud, and it wasn't too near,

But I opened my eyes when it tickled my ear.

Perhaps just a cough, I didn't quite know,

Then the sure sound of footsteps outside in the snow.

My soul gave a tremble, I struggled to hear,

And I crept to the door just to see who was near.

Standing out in the cold and the dark of the night,

A lone figure stood, his face weary and tight.

A soldier, I puzzled, some twenty years old,

Perhaps a Marine, huddled here in the cold.

Alone in the dark, he looked up and smiled,

Standing watch over me, and my wife and my child.

"What are you doing?" I asked without fear,

"Come in this moment, it's freezing out here!

Put down your pack, brush the snow from your sleeve,

You should be at home on a cold Christmas Eve!"

For barely a moment I saw his eyes shift,

Away from the cold and the snow blown in drifts..

To the window that danced with a warm fire's light

Then he sighed and he said "Its really all right,

I'm out here by choice. I'm here every night.

It's my duty to stand at the front of the line,

That separates you from the darkest of times.

No one had to ask or beg or implore me,

I'm proud to stand here like my fathers before me.

My Gramps died at 'Pearl' on a day in December,"

Then he sighed, "That's a Christmas 'Gram always remembers."

My dad stood his watch in the jungles of 'Nam',

And now it is my turn and so, here I am.

I've not seen my own son in more than a while,

But my wife sends me pictures, he's sure got her smile.

Then he bent and he carefully pulled from his bag,

The red, white, and blue... an American flag.

I can live through the cold and the being alone,

Away from my family, my house and my home.

I can stand at my post through the rain and the sleet,

I can sleep in a foxhole with little to eat.

I can carry the weight of killing another,

Or lay down my life with my sister and brother..

Who stand at the front against any and all,

To ensure for all time that this flag will not fall."

"So go back inside," he said, "harbor no fright,

Your family is waiting and I'll be all right."

"But isn't there something I can do, at the least,

"Give you money," I asked, "or prepare you a feast?

It seems all too little for all that you've done,

For being away from your wife and your son."

Then his eye welled a tear that held no regret,

"Just tell us you love us, and never forget

To fight for our rights back at home while we're gone,

To stand your own watch, no matter how long.

For when we come home, either standing or dead,

To know you remember we fought and we bled

Is payment enough, and with that we will trust,

That we mattered to you as you mattered to us."

NEWS FROM CHINA

THIS FROM OUR AGENT

1) WAGES FOR FACTORY WORKERS HAVE JUST BEEN INCREASED 66%.

2) NO MORE SEVEN DAY WORK WEEKS = LESS PRODUCTION TIME.

3) NO MORE OVERTIME = LESS PRODUCTION TIME.

4) MORE RETAIL OUTLETS ARE OPENING UP IN THE OUTER PROVINCES.  WORKERS DO NOT HAVE TO GO AND WORK AND SHOP IN FACTORY REGIONS. THIS WILL EQUAL A SHORTAGE OF LABOR AND LESS PRODUCTION TIME.

5) COST OF RAW MATERIALS HAVE INCREASED.  ALTHOUGH THEY HAVE GONE UP, THE BIGGEST ISSUE NOW IS THE COST OF LABOR.

TSSD HAS ALREADY BEEN GIVEN SOME "REVAMPED" PRICES FOR OUR NEXT PROJECT.  WE DO NOT PLAN TO RAISE OUR PRICES HOWEVER, UNLESS THE COSTS FROM CHINA GO EVEN HIGHER.

WE WILL SEE WHAT HAPPENS TO PRICES IN THE INTERNATIONAL MARKET AFTER THE ELECTIONS. THE COST OF PETROLEUM AFFECTS THE COST OF PLASTIC. HOPEFULLY "OIL AND GAS" PRICES WILL REMAIN AT TODAY'S LOWER LEVELS, OR EVEN GO DOWN SOME MORE(?)

OUR MAIN CONCERN IS WITH THE SPEED OF PRODUCTION.  WE HAVE A GOOD RELATIONSHIP WITH THE FACTORY NOW AFTER THREE YEARS, SO HOPEFULLY OUR "LITTLE PROJECTS" WILL STILL GET THEIR ATTENTION.

AND OF COURSE THE CHINESE NEW YEAR IS APPROACHING, AND THEY GENERALLY SHUT THE FACTORY DOWN FOR AT LEAST 2 WEEKS.

YES RUSS - I'M JEALOUS!

Hi VerSteegs,

How’s Sunny Cal?

Bet you can’t guess who I met last night and am going to the movies with tonight!

Clint Eastwood, Steven Spielberg, and numerous actors from the movie: "Flags of Our Fathers”.

Last night was a dinner for them and friends and family.  Tonight is the Premiere Performance in John Bradley’s home town next to our’s, Antigo, WI.

Barb and her family invited us to attend.  Tanner is in awe and already asked them for movie prop guns and uniforms.  He was given consideration and a name of the property manager to contact.  He is hopeful.

Any way I took the "Tarawa" playsets and Jim and Barb had them on a table, although some of your guys grace an Iwo replica cake with the BMC figures on top.

I wish I would have saved my Sands of Iwo Jima set by MARX.

Thanks Nick!

As some of you might be aware, Ron Barzso had a heart procedure last week. It appeared to go well, but yesterday Ron started having some problems, and was admitted back to the hospital.

He is feeling okay, but they are not sure what the problem is yet. It is very possible that it is just a matter of medication affecting him and what may likely be involved is simply adjusting the meds to get him back on track and prevent any further problems.

However, he expects to be in the hospital a few more days.

He also expects to be back out and filling orders again within the next week.

(So keep those orders coming, folks!)

He asks simply that you if you have sent in an order to be patient and that checks and/or charges will not be cashed until he is back filling orders.

We all hope that this is just a minor set back and he will be back up and about shortly.

UPDATE ON THE "FOV" / "TARGET" STORES vs CSA FLAG

FORCES OF VALOR HAS POSTED SOME NICE PICS OF ALL OF THE NEW HISTORICAL LEGENDS FIGURE SETS ON THEIR WEBSITE.

THIS SHOULD HELP EVERYONE UNDERSTAND WHAT THEY HAVE AND HOW IT COMES PACKAGED.

YOU WILL NOTICE THAT THE "CONFEDERATE BATTLE FLAG" HAS NOW APPARENTLY BEEN REPLACED BY THE CSA "BONNIE BLUE FLAG".

SAME WAR - DIFFERENT FLAG.

HOPEFULLY THIS MEANS WE WILL BE ABLE TO GET MORE CIVIL WAR FIGURES; THEY ARE REALLY NICELY DONE.

FLAGS OF OUR FATHERS

Hey Nick and DeAnna,

Yesterday I got to my stack of playsets from the show.

I sure was surprised when I opened my WWII Pacific theater set from you guys.

My friends were over at the time.  Barb is the daughter of one of the flag raisers at Iwo Jima.

She is my PT.  Her dad never told his kids about the event and he always took off for a two week fishing trip to Canada on the anniversary.  So anyone who called could not talk to him.  He was a very humble man.  She took a trip to Iwo five years ago with Spielberg as her brother Jim wrote the popular book “Flags of our Fathers”.   They took their Ma and were given a tour by the Japs as they still have the island as part of their country.

Spielberg had to many irons in the fire and gave the rights to Clint Eastwood who took the family back again during filming to make sure they were okay with the story of their father.

Small world.

Anyway my common folk friends have never seen such a set as they have not touched a toy soldier since they were kids.

They were really impressed as the stuff you did in the set looked like the movie set.  They loved the Buffalo Landing crafts and the paint jobs.

So, I told them I would get them a set.

Barb is going to display it in her waiting room.  We are going to make a diorama with a small Mt. Surabachi and the BMC flag raisers.

Thanks much,

Russ

.......... The Bradley boys, now "men" are also interested in obtaining copies your playset and the BMC one. I will get back to you how many they want. So, thanks for the donation of the Iwo set. Let me know what I owe yee and I kin git out as soon as yer ready fer me. Yer Pal, Russ

POLITICALLY CORRECT?

STRIKES AGAIN!

ACCORDING TO "FORCES OF VALOR", THEY HAD 116 CASES OF THE NEW "HISTORICAL LEGENDS" FIGURES RETURNED TO THEM - BY "TARGET" STORES.

REASON:

SOME OF THE BLISTER PACKS CAME WITH ......

A CONFEDERATE FLAG.

TO TOP IT OFF - THE STORES WERE IN THE SOUTH!!??

ROBERT E. LEE MUST BE ROLLING........!?

ONE NOW HAS TO WONDER - HOW SOON WILL OUR HOBBY BE SHUT DOWN?  AFTER ALL, AREN'T WE "WAR MONGERS" AND DEALING IN EVIL THINGS?

THE CIVIL WAR NEVER HAPPENED?

WWII NEVER HAPPENED?

HELP ME PLEASE - I DON'T GET IT?

( WE WILL HAVE THE "OFFENDING" SAID BLISTER PACKS IN CHICAGO!! )
